CORE lab graduate student Yian Xu presented her work at Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP) 2019 Annual Convention on Feb 9 in Portland, Oregon. Yian presented her collaboration work with Dr. Xuan Li at New York University Shanghai, showing that  multi-cultural experience shapes essentialist beliefs about nationality concepts. Preliminary findings suggest that participants’ origin culture plays a critical role in determining whether such experience leads to an increase or decrease in essentialist thinking.
Yian also co-organized the sixth annual gathering of the Young Chinese Association for Personality and Social Psychology (YCA-PSP). Dr. Steven Heine from UBC gave an interesting talk about genetic essentialism and Dr. Jackson Lu from MIT presented his newest findings about astrological stereotypes in China.
